About the course

Join us to explore the rich tapestry of past civilisations and their enduring legacies.

Through this course you will take a dive deep into the world of the ancient Celts to consider their language, religion, and how they influenced Britain's cultural fabric.

You will examine the mysteries of the Picts with an exploration of their sophisticated society and their interactions with neighbouring Scots and Vikings that led to the formation of Alba.

You’ll then move into the Viking era where you’ll learn about their origins in Scandinavia, societal structures, and expansive raids that reshaped many regions.

You'll analyse variety of sources from Dark Age research, including archaeology and written accounts and visit the National Museum of Scotland to learn how these groups influenced each other and contributed to modern culture.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a device with an internet connection.

What you'll learn

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the key archaeological sites, monuments, burial customs, dwellings, economies, and religious practices of the Celts, Picts, and Vikings;
  • Examine the motivations behind Viking raids, exploring the historical and archaeological evidence to understand why these expeditions were launched;
