About the course
You will explore the vibrant and eclectic world of contemporary American fiction from the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
You will review a selection of novels that capture the connection between innovative narrative techniques and traditional storytelling elements.
Through the consideration of a range of significant American authors, you will explore how these authors, writing in the recent past and today, reflect upon and critique the continuous transformation of American society, while addressing universal themes such as identity, conflict, and the pursuit of meaning.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection.
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Analyse the textual strategies used in contemporary American fiction to explore how they convey complex themes and narratives
- Evaluate how American novelists engage with and reflect the historical and political contexts of the United States in their works
- Develop an understanding of the literary innovations that have characterised American fiction over the recent decades

No prior knowledge is required. This course is perfect for anyone interested in contemporary American society and literature.

Entry criteria
The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study. No previous knowledge of literature is required, but a keen interest in the subject would be helpful.
You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
