About the course
You will explore the evolution of feminist thought through literature in this online course, through the works of authors including Margaret Attwood (The Handmaids Tale), Charlotte Bronte (Jane Eyre) and Alice Walker (The Color Purple).
You will delve into novels and stories that have shaped and reflected feminist discourse since the 19th century. Discussions will consider the emergence of the 'New Woman,' the ongoing battle for artistic recognition among female authors, and the complex intersections of gender, race, class, and religion.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection.
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe how social, historical, cultural, and political factors have shaped the evolution of women’s writing from the 19th century to the present
- Examine the progression of feminist ideas in literature, highlighting how these concepts have been expressed in various historical and cultural contexts
- Discuss feminist ideologies and themes in chosen texts, developing an ability to articulate these ideas effectively

No prior knowledge is required; this course is designed for learners new to the subject, as well as for those with some prior knowledge.

Entry criteria
The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study. No previous knowledge of literature is required, but a keen interest in the subject would be helpful.
You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills including being able to confidently use Zoom (videoconferencing software) and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
