About the course
This one-day course explores the famous gunpowder plot and its background in the reign of James VI of Scotland and I of England. You will explore the politics and religion of the 17th century, the relationship between Scotland and England, including their unified crowns, and the events leading to Guy Fawkes’ attempts to blow up parliament.
You will use primary sources and historical discussion to explore this complex and controversial event in the history of British politics.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection.
If you complete this course, you could continue your learning on one of our other longer history courses (5 or 10 weeks).
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe what the Gunpowder Plot was and who was involved
- Explain why it happened and the events leading up to it
- Assess the consequences of the Plot and its aftermath
Who the course is for
No prior knowledge is required, making this course accessible to all with an interest in the history of England, Scotland and Britain and / or the history of royalty and government.

Entry criteria
The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.
You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
