An Introduction to Ancient Egypt

You will explore the history, architecture and religion of Ancient Egypt, using artefacts from the period to examine the role of rulers, dynasties and gods.

You will consider religion, rulership and everyday life through the analysis of evidence from pyramids, temples and tombs. This will include reflecting on the use of hieroglyphs and mummies and how this is related to the daily life of those living at the time.

Any recommended reading will be advised by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a computer or other device with internet connection.

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

• Assess the main Egyptian dynasties, deities and mythology, reflecting on connections between them
• Analyse key archaeological sources with reference to the themes of religion, rulership and daily life
• Evaluate ancient Egypt in the context of contemporary cultures and assess its continuing influence today

No prior knowledge is required, this course is suitable for learners new to the subject, with an interest in archaeology and ancient civilisations.

The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study. No previous knowledge is required, but a keen interest in the subject would be helpful.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
