Learning for Sustainable Futures: Supporting People, Practice and Policy (Scotland)

Across 13 weeks, with 7 weeks of active engagement, you will combine live facilitated sessions with self-directed study, reflection and collaboration with other education professionals in Scotland.

The course will help you to:

• Understand sustainability through a holistic exploration of interconnected global challenges and polycrises.
• Explore approaches to Learning for Sustainability and consider how sustainability-related knowledge, skills and values can be embedded across your professional practice.
• Develop your confidence to take positive action towards more sustainable and just futures.
• Connect with other educators, setting leaders and policy-makers to share perspectives, reflect on pedagogy and develop ideas.
• Apply your learning by developing a project or activity relevant to your own professional context.

Through interactive live webinars, collaborative online activities, individual reflection and self-directed study, you will have opportunities to connect course ideas with your own practice. Scotland-specific content will explore the priorities of curriculum reform in Scotland and their relationship with global challenges.

You will also have access to a dedicated online space for collaboration and reflection, alongside signposting to relevant resources, professional reading and further learning opportunities.

The learning approach for this course aligns with the National Model of Professional Learning. Over 7 weeks, you will:

Critically reflect on:

• our collective understanding of sustainability and the need for action
• the role of personal values and frameworks for thinking when shaping responses to sustainability challenges
• opportunities for personal or professional action within your own context.

Gain a deeper understanding of:

• sustainability-related pedagogy and policy from global to Scottish contexts
• the interlinked nature of sustainability issues and responses
• how systems thinking and spheres of influence can support meaningful action.

Collaborate with others to:

• share perspectives, resources and approaches with colleagues from a range of contexts
• explore current priorities and practical challenges for Learning for Sustainability
• celebrate achievements and identify opportunities for continued collaboration, including through Learning for Sustainability Scotland’s established Community of Practice.

This course is for educators, setting leaders and policy-makers in Scotland in any formal or informal setting who want to collaborate across a community of practice to gain a better understanding of the values, skills and approaches at the heart of education for flourishing and just futures.

While there are no specific entry requirements, this course is for those working with formal or informal education sector in Scotland.
