Marine Biology and Ecology (Online)

Explore a range of marine ecosystems, from the shoreline to the deep sea, and the biology and ecology of the creatures that live there. Together we’ll examine different organisms and communities and consider the ways they are shaped by the physical and biological environment.

We’ll investigate the origin of the oceans, and the evolution of life in them, and also the big picture of the relationships between the physical and biological components of the oceans, the atmosphere, and how these combine to influence the global climate. We’ll also look at human impacts, climate change, and the future of the oceans.

We will participate in interactive activities and discussions as we journey through the different oceanic realms.

Any recommended reading will be advised by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a computer or other device with internet connection.

Your online classes will be held on Zoom. You will need access to a computer equipped with a camera and microphone, a headset or earphones and a reliable internet connection.

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

• Describe major marine habitats and recognise the diverse lifeforms that inhabit them
• Explain key biological and physical factors affecting marine organisms, from individuals to interacting communities
• Explain interactions between life, the oceans and the atmosphere, how these are changing, and potential futures for the oceans
• Demonstrate transferable analytical and observational skills by identifying threats to marine ecosystems and interpreting evidence of drivers and change. 

This course is for anyone with a curiosity about the Earth and its oceans. It assumes no prior knowledge and covers a wide range of topics including life in the oceans, different ocean ecosystems, climate change and the interactions between oceans, atmosphere and life.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. You do not need to have any prior knowledge about marine science or biology.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented orally and in writing. You must be comfortable studying in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the study materials.

Booking is available until 23:59 the day before the course is due to start, unless the course is full or cancelled.
