About the course
This course is an introduction to Modern European History, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. You will explore four key periods, focusing on pivotal events such as the Reformation, the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, and begin to consider themes such as absolutism, colonialism, nationalism and state formation.
By looking at case studies, you will be guided through the overarching developments in this formative period of history, assessing how major events and phenomena brought about gradual change, creating the basis for modern Europe.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection.
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Assess the major events and changes in Europe from the 16th to the 19 centuries;
- Evaluate and interpret primary historical sources;
- Discuss conflicting historical arguments.

No previous experience is required.

Entry criteria
This course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.
You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
