About the course

In this introduction to social history, we’ll look at ordinary lives in Scotland from 1830 to the present.

By analysing historical texts, autobiographies, visual material and oral history, you will examine the events, trends and characteristics of life in the past two centuries and how they influenced men, women and children.

You’ll consider issues of class, gender and ethnicity and experiences across the diverse geographical spread of Scotland, from cities, coasts and lowlands to Highlands and Islands.

In this course you will also assess the impact of major events and developments, including the World Wars, women’s suffrage, and the rise of the welfare state.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.

You will require access to a device with an internet connection.

What you'll learn

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Assess social developments in Scotland in the period and show an awareness of their context beyond Scotland;

  • Analyse primary sources and reflect on their uses.
