About the course
Dive into the world of silent cinema, where the motion picture, as we know it, began.
You will explore the innovations, storytelling and impact of silent cinema on the film industry as a whole.
You will gain an insight into the most important trends and techniques in silent cinema and compare different schools and styles.
You will review examples from early cinema to understand the blurring of boundaries between mainstream and avant-garde cinema.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection.
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Analyse the development of cinematic techniques and narrative strategies, recognising consistent themes and notable eras in film history
- Evaluate the impact of technical advancements and artistic innovations on cinema and discuss how various directorial styles and regional characteristics influence film
- Critically assess how cinema both influences and is influenced by socio-political views
Who the course is for
No prior knowledge is required; this course is designed for learners new to the subject, as well as for those with a prior knowledge of film studies.

Entry criteria
The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study. No previous knowledge of film studies is required, but a keen interest in film would be helpful.
You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
