About the course

Giotto was an Italian painter and architect from Florence, known for laying the foundations for European artistic traditions by introducing depth, natural movement and human expression and helping start the shift towards the Renaissance style.

You will examine the artistic and cultural developments of late medieval Italy, focusing on the work of Giotto and his contemporaries and place these developments in the religious, political and cultural context of the time, looking at specific cultural catalysts for change.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.

You will require access to a device with an internet connection.

What you'll learn

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key developments in late medieval Italian art
  • Analyse the cultural and political context of the work of Giotto and his contemporaries
  • Develop transferable skills in visual analysis, critical thinking, and contextual interpretation by examining artistic and cultural transformations in late medieval Italy

No prior knowledge is required, making this course accessible to all with an interest in art history.

Entry criteria

The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
