The Vikings

This course examines the archaeology of the Viking Age, from the earliest Viking evidence in the 8th century to the 11th.  

Using a selection of sources – including written documents and objects displayed in the National Museum of Scotland – you will learn about Viking activity in Scandinavia, the British Isles, and further afield to the east in Russia and to the West in Greenland and North America.  

You will take a detailed look at a variety of archaeological sites in Scotland and themes of settlement, economy, religion, maritime technology, and exploration. You will consider complex connections between the Scandinavians and the indigenous peoples whom they encountered and reflect on the enduring legacy and reputation of the Vikings.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.

You will require access to a device with an internet connection. 

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:  

• Discuss the Vikings’ key archaeological monuments, burial practices, house types, economy, religion and military evidence;
• Assess the most important archaeological sites from this time period;
• Evaluate the impact of the Vikings in their time, and on modern European culture. 

No previous experience is required.

This course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.  

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
