Understanding the Earth

Learn how the Earth works by exploring the processes that shape our planet across a remarkable range of scales, from planet to atom.

Learners will be introduced to the origin and evolution of the Earth and examine how our planet formed and continues to change over geological time. We will chart how the study of volcanism, earthquakes and exploration of the ocean floor led to the theory of plate tectonics and how this applies to the Earth today.

You will have the opportunity to examine minerals and rock specimens to consider how different rock types (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) provide different information about the Earth, from its dynamic interior to its mobile outer shell and surface processes.

Any recommended reading will be advised by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a computer or other device with internet connection.

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

• Describe the fundamentals of planet Earth – its age, composition and Solar System context
• Explain how Earth’s dynamic processes (seismicity, volcanism and mountain formation) are related to plate tectonics
• Apply analytical and observational skills to identify and interpret igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, and communicate what they reveal about Earth’s history.

No previous experience is necessary. This course is for anyone with a curiosity about Earth and its long history. Whether you have pondered this when hill walking or looking at a museum display, this course will help you understand how it all fits together and how geologists work it out.

No previous experience is required.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
