About the course

Discover the unique perspectives of women to Western philosophy. Delve into the works of influential female thinkers and explore the reasons behind the underrepresentation of women in philosophy.

You will examine the evolution of philosophical thought and women's roles since the early modern period, featuring discussions of Mary Midgley's influential work and Susan Stebbing’s study of philosophy's intersection with public life, political rhetoric and advertising.

You will also explore significant contributions to contemporary philosophy, including Elizabeth Anscombe’s moral philosophy, Philippa Foot’s ‘trolley problem’, and Susan Haack’s critiques of ‘scientism’.

Finally, you will dig into feminist philosophy, analysing arguments on pornography, objectification, and hate speech, guided by voices like Rae Langton.

You will require access to a device with an internet connection. Recommended and essential reading will be advised by the course tutor once the course is confirmed to run.
