About the course

Dive into the world of screenwriting with this practical course which will guide you from the initial spark of an idea to the final draft of a script.

You will generate ideas, develop intricate plots, and create compelling characters, all while mastering the art of storytelling for film and television. Through practical activities, you will gain the skills to present professional screenplays, develop coherent stories, and write persuasively for visual media. The course also includes critical analysis of iconic films which will enhance understanding and enable you to apply their knowledge.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a device with an internet connection. 

What you'll learn

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Professionally format and present scripts, ensuring they meet industry standards and reflect diverse narratives
  • Transform initial concepts into structured, engaging narratives suitable for film and television
  • Critically evaluate and enhance scripts, identifying and resolving structural and narrative issues 

Who the course is for

This course is designed for aspiring screenwriters and enthusiasts of film and television drama who are interested in learning the craft of writing for visual media. It is for individuals with no previous screenwriting experience as well as those looking to formalise and enhance their skills.

Entry criteria

The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study. No previous knowledge of creative writing is required, but a keen interest in screenwriting would be helpful.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
